About the Founder of Krav Maga: Imi Lichtenfeld

Imi Lichtenfeld (1910–1998) is the legendary founder of Krav Maga, the world’s most effective and battle-tested self-defense system. Born in Budapest and raised in Bratislava, Imi grew up training in boxing, wrestling, and gymnastics under the guidance of his father, a respected police officer and self-defense instructor. His unique combination of athletic skill, real-world fighting experience, and moral compass shaped the foundation of what would become Krav Maga.

In the 1930s, Imi fought to protect the Jewish community from violent anti-Semitic gangs. These brutal street battles forced him to adapt his skills into practical techniques designed for survival — fast, instinctive, and effective under real pressure. This philosophy of simplicity, efficiency, and realism became the cornerstone of Krav Maga.

After emigrating to Israel, Imi was recruited to train the newly formed Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). He developed Krav Maga into the official hand-to-hand combat system of the IDF, ensuring soldiers had reliable skills for close-quarters combat. His teachings were later adapted for civilians, law enforcement, and special forces around the world, spreading Krav Maga far beyond Israel’s borders.

Imi believed Krav Maga was not only about fighting but also about building character, confidence, and responsibility. His famous principle — “So that one may walk in peace” — remains the heart of Krav Maga’s philosophy today.

Thanks to Imi Lichtenfeld’s vision, millions of people worldwide practice Krav Maga to defend themselves, protect others, and live with greater confidence and security.
